Bright, Bohemian Micro-Wedding in Sintra, Portugal
As destination weddings seem like a bit of a distant dream right now, we are thrilled to be bringing you this charming destination micro wedding set in Sintra, Portugal. Mike and Jenny are huge travel lovers so they knew they would tie the knot abroad. So on October 1st, 2019, they did just that. Today let’s live vicariously through this beautiful couple as we fly to Europe to take a peek at their outdoor, boho wedding. Thank you to D10Photo for the stunning photographs!
A destination wedding in Portugal for an adventurous couple
Mike and Jenny had a love for travel well before they met and fell in love in Vancouver, Canada, where they are both from. Their wanderlust had taken them to far flung corners of the world, but namely, not Portugal. In their research of potential places for an outdoor wedding in Europe, they found Portugal to tick all of the boxes. It had great food, green landscapes and wouldn’t break the bank. Though they had never been to Portugal, they came across the enchanting mountainous terrain of Sintra. As hiking enthusiasts and Vancouver residents, Sintra reminded them of home so it seemed the perfect place for them.
The trickiest part would be knowing how to plan this wedding, having never been before. They also made the decision to not visit the country at all before the wedding! So they would need to find a location and all of their suppliers in a country 8 hours ahead with no knowledge of the local language or customs. That’s where they hired me, Olivia, from Nulyweds, to plan their destination wedding in Portugal. We used video tours and meetings to make sure that Mike and Jenny felt in control of their wedding planning, every step of the way.
Don’t let distance scare you away from the wedding of your dreams. It is totally possible with a good wedding planner on your side that can bridge the gap between the wedding you want and the country you’re traveling to.
Bright bohemian outdoor wedding
Mike and Jenny were 100% set on having as much of the wedding day outdoors as possible. They chose Quinta do Pé da Serra for its amazing views across the balcony and secret intimate garden where they would host their evening meal.
The styling was to be simple and leafy with pops of bright color. Lilac, peach and pinks flourished the floral pieces by Happy Day Events. As a micro wedding of just under 40 guests, they didn’t need a big ostentatious display for their ceremony, and opted for simple foliage runners and two statement pieces to head up the aisle.
As a nod to their Canadian roots, In Love Stationery created maple leaf shaped menus. They also made the name cards into wine colored tags, which had Mike’s awful Dad jokes printed on them as a surprise!
For the tablescape, they chose flat foliage runners, colorful votive candles and delicate festoon lighting for an elegant, inviting, outdoor setup. They didn’t want much crowding the table as the food would be served family-style.
There was no cake adding to the non-traditional feel. Instead they opted for a buffet of Portuguese pastries and sweet treats.
A micro wedding of close friends and family
Mike and Jenny wanted their wedding day to be a celebration of the people who supported their relationship. “There would be no us without you” said Jenny during her speech. So with this in mind, the wedding was designed to feel as familial as possible. Carly from Your EU Wedding Celebrant crafted a completely bespoke ceremony for the couple, telling the story of their union and the importance of everyone there. The ceremony showed a lot of the couple’s sense of humor and romance they had for each other.
For the evening meal, a family style spread was the perfect way to go. The main meal was a smorgasbord of Portuguese favorites - bacalhau com natas (traditional codfish with cream), duke wellington and piri piri BBQ chicken. The plates were made to share and the guests loved it. It made the dining experience so much more fun and relaxed than a plated 3 course meal.
A party for the ages
Music was very important to Mike and Jenny. They are both music lovers and Jenny even plays piano! This is why it is always good practice to create a playlist of music you like for your DJ to create a custom mix for you. This is doubly important for destination wedding where cultural differences play a huge factor.
During cocktail hour, they had the 24 Robbers Swing Band serenade their party on the balcony, which was a highlight of the day for many guests. The couple were able to customize their set list to play some of their favorite soul songs.
In the evening, Groovebox then rocked the party with everyone on the dance floor. The couple love house music and party favorites so it was a fun, upbeat dance-fueled night!
